On a tragic day in May 2020, the quiet community of Danville, Alabama, was rocked by a violent act that claimed the lives of three individuals. Among them was James Edward Miller, a 55-year-old male who found himself in the midst of a deadly domestic dispute. The incident, which unfolded on May 24th, also resulted in the deaths of Miller's girlfriend, 54-year-old Teresa Lynn Peters, and her 50-year-old sister, Tammy Renee Smith.
The violence erupted from a domestic situation involving Teresa Peters' ex-husband, Carson Ray Peters. Authorities identified Carson Peters as the sole suspect in the triple homicide. In the aftermath of the shootings, he turned himself in to U.S. Marshals in Decatur. The investigation revealed that in addition to the three fatalities, Teresa's mother, Mary Kennedy, was also injured during the attack.
Following his arrest, Carson Ray Peters was charged with multiple counts of capital murder. The Morgan County District Attorney's office initially announced its intention to seek the death penalty in the case. For a time, it appeared that the case was headed for a capital trial. However, in a significant development in November 2023, a plea deal was reached.
Carson Peters pleaded guilty to the murders and, in exchange, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. This agreement spared him from a potential death sentence. In addition to the life sentences for the three murders, he also received a 20-year sentence for the first-degree assault of Mary Louise Kennedy. Another individual, a woman named April Hanner, was also arrested in connection with the case and faced a charge of hindering prosecution. The resolution of the case through the plea deal brought a conclusion to the legal proceedings, ensuring that Carson Peters would spend the remainder of his life incarcerated for his actions.
