In the quiet community of Valhermoso Springs, Alabama, a horrific scene unfolded on the night of June 4, 2020, forever changing the lives of many. Seventeen-year-old Dakota Rena Green, a vibrant young woman with a love for life, was among seven individuals found deceased in a home on Talucah Road. The victims, who ranged in age from 17 to 45, had all been shot multiple times in what authorities would later describe as a 'cold-blooded' and 'incredibly heinous' act.
Responding to a 911
call about gunshots, Morgan County Sheriff's deputies arrived to find the house partially engulfed in flames, a deliberate attempt to destroy evidence. Inside the home, they discovered the bodies of Dakota Green, Tammy England Muzzey, 45, Emily Brooke Payne, 21, Roger Lee Jones Jr., 19, Jeramy Wade Roberts, 31, William Zane Hodgin, 18, and James Wayne Benford, 22. A dog was also found deceased at the scene. The investigation into the septuple homicide, deemed the most significant crime in the history of Morgan County, quickly pointed to a dispute involving a motorcycle club known as the 'Seven Deadly Sins,' to which some of the victims and the suspects belonged.
The ensuing investigation led law enforcement across the country to Oregon, where two suspects, Frederic Allen 'Ric' Rogers, 23, and John Michael Legg, 20, were apprehended during a traffic stop. Both men, natives of Morgan County who knew the victims, were extradited back to Alabama to face capital murder charges. The Morgan County District Attorney's office announced their intention to seek the death penalty for both men.
The legal proceedings brought some measure of closure to the families of the victims. In August 2024, the trial for Frederic Rogers commenced. The prosecution presented a harrowing account of the events, supported by over 1,000 crime scene photos. Rogers was ultimately convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Following his co-defendant's conviction, John Michael Legg, after being found mentally competent to stand trial, entered a guilty plea to the charge of capital murder in December 2024. His plea came as the final chapter in the legal pursuit of justice for the seven lives tragically cut short in the Valhermoso Springs massacre.
