In the small, rural community of Melvin, Alabama, just a mile from the Mississippi state line, the new year began with a shocking act of violence that would claim the life of a beloved local pastor. Timothy Pearson, a 57-year-old Black / African American male, was a respected figure in Choctaw County. A former U.S. Marine and retired Postmaster, he had dedicated 27 years to preaching, serving as the pastor of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church for nearly 15 of those years. His commitment to his community was evident through his involvement in various local boards and organizations, including the Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce. He was a man known for his kindness and positive impact on everyone he met.
The tranquility of the early morning on January 8, 2021, was shattered when a 911 call reported a shooting at the Pearson residence just after midnight. When deputies from the Choctaw County Sheriff's Department arrived, they found a tragic scene. Pastor Pearson was deceased, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. His wife of 34 years, Melony Pearson, was also injured in the attack. She was transported to a medical center in Meridian in serious condition but was later reported to be stable.
The investigation into the senseless killing quickly gained momentum. Later on the same day as the shooting, an 18-year-old woman named Melissa Breauna Hill turned herself in to the authorities. She was subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the attack on the Pearsons, and her bond was set at over one million dollars. The community was left reeling, trying to comprehend who would want to harm the respected pastor and his wife.
The case took another stunning turn nearly two months later. On March 8, 2021, U.S. Marshals in Plano, Texas, arrested a second suspect: Shannon Xavier Pearson, the 25-year-old son of the slain pastor. He was taken into custody and faced charges of murder and conspiracy to murder his own father, as well as the attempted murder of his mother. Like Hill, his bond was set at one million dollars. Following his arrest, an attorney for Melissa Hill expressed that she and her client were pleased that Shannon Pearson had been charged and had faith that justice would be served. Authorities have not released a motive for the crime.
