In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 23, 2012, tragedy struck in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C., forever altering the lives of the family and friends of Antione Bates. At approximately 1:51 a.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the night in the 500 block of Crittenden Street, NW. Responding to reports of a shooting, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Fourth District arrived to find a young man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The victim was identified as 23-year-old Antione Bates, a Black male from Northwest, D.C. Emergency medical personnel quickly transported him to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Tragically, their efforts were in vain, and Antione Bates succumbed to his injuries, his life cut short by an act of violence.
In the wake of the shooting, detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch launched an investigation into the fatal incident. The authorities have actively sought assistance from the public, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Bates's death.
