In the early summer of 2021, a young Black/African American man's life was cut short in Uniontown, Alabama. Jimmie Lee Rembert Jr., a 25-year-old male, was shot and killed on June 2, 2021. The incident that led to his death began with a seemingly innocuous activity among acquaintances.
On that fateful night, Rembert was with 17-year-old Aldonte Jaquan Banks and another individual, Johnnie Robertson Jr.
The trio was reportedly firing their handguns into the air, comparing the loudness of their weapons. According to court documents, the situation took a tragic turn when Banks, instead of firing into the air like the others, aimed his 9mm pistol at Rembert and fired multiple times.
In the days following the shooting, Aldonte Jaquan Banks was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Rembert's death. He was incarcerated at the Perry County Jail. However, the story took another dramatic turn when Banks managed to escape from the facility. In fact, he escaped from the jail on two separate occasions within a week in early September of that year.
The first escape was followed by a recapture. Undeterred, Banks escaped for a second time on September 6, 2021. This prompted a more intensive manhunt. Later that same day, with the assistance of his mother and an aunt, Aldonte Jaquan Banks surrendered to the police near Uniontown. Following his second capture, he was returned to the Perry County Jail to await legal proceedings for the murder charge.
