In the small city of Abbeville, Alabama, the life of Willie James Davis Jr., a 45-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short on October 30, 2021. The father of five was at the Girard Court Apartments, where he lived with his girlfriend, when he was shot multiple times. The incident shattered the lives of his loved ones and left a community in search of answers. Davis was remembered by his family as a kind spirit who would do anything for anyone.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to Bruce Weems of Dothan. Authorities learned that Weems was in a relationship with the daughter of Davis's girlfriend. Following the shooting, Weems fled the scene, sparking a four-hour manhunt involving law enforcement in a heavily wooded area in Henry County before he was finally apprehended. His initial bond was set at $500,000, which was later reduced to $150,000 with the condition of electronic monitoring if he were to be released.
Initially charged with murder, Bruce Weems pleaded not guilty. However, instead of proceeding to a trial, Weems reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. In January 2023, he agreed to a reduced charge of manslaughter. This plea deal resulted in a 20-year prison sentence. The victim's family expressed a sense of relief that justice was served, but also conveyed their feeling that the punishment should have been harsher, especially since they were not informed that a plea deal was being offered. They also pointed to a prior arrest of Weems for shooting into an occupied residence just a week before the fatal incident, believing that had he remained in jail, their brother would still be alive.
