On January 20, 2022, at approximately 11 p.m., Wetumpka police responded to reports of gunfire in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter on U.S. Highway 231. Upon arrival, officers discovered 42-year-old Centell Winston of Tallassee deceased inside his vehicle from apparent gunshot wounds. This incident marked Wetumpka's first homicide in over three years.
