In the quiet community of Hope Hull, Alabama, the life of 40-year-old Joseph David Williams was brought to a tragic and violent end on the evening of January 11, 2023. A white male, Williams was a local business owner, running Alabama Roofing and Restoration, Inc. He was known for his love of the outdoors, with a passion for bird hunting and saltwater fishing, and for his hospitality, often opening his home to friends and family for gatherings.
That Wednesday night, events unfolded that would shatter the peace of this small town. At a residence on George Drive, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal encounter. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office responded to a call and discovered Williams deceased at the scene, the victim of a gunshot wound.
Also present at the home was 40-year-old Terry Brandon Cumbie of Pike Road. Investigations by law enforcement indicated that Cumbie had forcibly entered the residence through a bedroom door, armed with a. 45 caliber pistol. Inside, he reportedly harassed Williams and another individual before ultimately shooting and killing Williams. Cumbie was taken into custody at the scene without incident.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Terry Brandon Cumbie was charged with capital murder in connection with a burglary and first-degree domestic violence involving a burglary. Joseph Williams was survived by his mother, Cindy McQueen, and his two children, Edy and Nixon Williams. A memorial service to celebrate his life was held on January 19, 2023, at Leak Memory Chapel in Montgomery, where family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of a man described as a treasured son and a dear friend.
