In Atmore, Alabama, on the night of February 20, 2023, the life of 16-year-old Janyia Wilson was tragically cut short. A sophomore and volleyball player at Escambia County High School, she was fatally shot while sitting in a vehicle. The incident occurred near the intersection of Carver and Ashley streets.
Following the shooting, her 16-year-old boyfriend drove her to Atmore Community Hospital.
She was unresponsive upon arrival, and despite the efforts of the emergency department staff, she could not be saved and was pronounced dead. Atmore police investigators were dispatched to the hospital around 10 p.m. in response to the reported shooting.
The suspect, who was dating Wilson, was taken into custody shortly after the incident. He was subsequently charged with murder. The Escambia County District Attorney's office made the decision to charge the 16-year-old suspect as an adult. He was held at the Escambia County Detention Center on a $1 million bond. Due to a confidentiality act in Alabama concerning suspects under the age of 17, his name has not been publicly released.
The investigation into the motive for the shooting was ongoing. Law enforcement officials confirmed that they had arrested the individual they believed to be responsible for the murder and were not searching for any other suspects.
