On February 20, 2023, 16-year-old Janyia Wilson, a sophomore volleyball player at Escambia County High School, was fatally shot in Atmore, Alabama. The incident occurred inside a vehicle near the intersection of Carver and Ashley streets. Her 16-year-old boyfriend, who was present during the shooting, transported her to Atmore Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
