In the fading light of a Sunday evening in Washington, D.C., a routine patrol turned into the discovery of a grim scene. On December 28, 2014, in the 1300 block of Southern Avenue, SE, a Metropolitan Police Department officer happened upon a car that was the centerpiece of a double homicide. Just before 10 p.m., the officer found 71-year-old Preston Cornelius Johnson Sr.
of Capitol Heights, Maryland, lying on the ground outside the vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Inside the car, the officer made a second tragic discovery. Preston Cornelius Johnson Jr., the 49-year-old son of the man lying outside, was also found, having been shot as well. The younger Johnson, a resident of Suitland, was deceased inside the vehicle. Both men, father and son, were pronounced dead at the scene, their lives brought to an abrupt and violent end on a quiet street.
The Metropolitan Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the double homicide. In the immediate aftermath, details were scarce. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for the killings. A significant reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any suspect or suspects involved in the shooting deaths of the two men.
