On November 19, 1972, Chief of Police Thomas Clifford Dillon, aged 32, was fatally shot while responding to a holdup at a local cab company in downtown Bethel, Alaska. Upon arrival, Chief Dillon encountered an armed suspect wielding a shotgun. A gunfire exchange ensued, during which Chief Dillon sustained a fatal chest wound. Despite his injury, he managed to wound the assailant, who was subsequently apprehended by other officers.
