On November 19, 1972, Chief of Police Thomas Clifford Dillon, age 32, white male, responded to a report of a holdup at a cab company in downtown Bethel, Alaska. When he arrived, an armed confrontation erupted. The suspect wielded a shotgun; Chief Dillon returned fire with his service pistol. He was struck in the chest and fatally wounded, though he managed to wound the assailant before other officers moved in. He was pronounced at the end of watch that day in Bethel.
