On the evening of April 2, 2014, in Homer, Alaska, a 24-year-old Black male, Aaron Michael Rael-Catholic, crossed paths with law enforcement after a domestic violence call drew an Alaska State Trooper to East End Road. The woman who phoned for help told troopers she had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend but had managed to flee in her car; minutes later, near McLay Road about four miles out East End Road, two vehicles collided and one rolled, setting the stage for a chaotic roadside struggle.
