On December 8, 2014, Brian Joseph Sullivan, a 48-year-old assistant district attorney, was fatally shot in Utqiaġvik, Alaska, formerly known as Barrow. Sullivan, originally from University Place, Washington, had served in the United States Army as a judge advocate general and military police officer before relocating to Alaska in 2001. In 2012, he moved to Utqiaġvik to work as an assistant district attorney, seeking to experience life in an Alaska Native community.
