On September 22, 2016, 43-year-old Billy Jens Leavitt of Barrow, Alaska, tragically lost his life. Billy was the son of Dr. Oliver Aveogan Leavitt, a prominent Iñupiat leader and whaling captain from Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow). Dr. Leavitt's extensive contributions to the North Slope Iñupiat community included serving on the board of the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC) and holding various leadership roles since the corporation's inception in 1972.
