In the early morning hours of November 11, 2016, the sound of gunshots echoed through the 3000 block of Stanton Road in Southeast Washington, D.C. When police arrived at the Stanton Glen Apartment complex around 1:27 a.m., they discovered the bodies of two young men on the steps. One of the victims was 25-year-old Samuelle Buie. He, along with 19-year-old Rassaan Jennings, was found unconscious and not breathing.
Emergency medical services transported both men to separate area hospitals,
but their injuries proved fatal, and both were later pronounced dead. The Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the double murder. The initial investigation revealed that gunfire had not only claimed two lives but had also caused damage to nearby homes and vehicles, suggesting a chaotic and violent scene.
In the days that followed, authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the deaths of Buie and Jennings. It was not immediately clear if the two men knew each other, and as of late November 2016, a motive for the killings had not been established by police.
