According to charging documents and prosecutors' public statements, her boyfriend, 21-year-old Victor Sibson, attempted to take his own life with a handgun; the bullet passed through his head and continued on to strike Brittany-Mae Haag. Accounts presented in court said she was trying to intervene as he reached for the weapon. The scene yielded only one spent casing, and the bullet that killed the 22-year-old was recovered during autopsy, details that underscored investigators' conclusion that a single round caused both wounds.
Arrests and charges followed quickly. A grand jury indicted Victor Sibson on May 16, 2017, for second-degree murder in the death of Brittany-Mae Haag; he turned himself in several days later and a judge entered a not-guilty plea at his arraignment.
