It was early on Valentine's Day morning in 2019 when the life of 32-year-old David Anthony Remen, a male from La Crosse, Wisconsin, was tragically cut short in Washington, D.C.. At approximately 5:49 a.m. on February 14th, inside an establishment in the 1700 block of Hamlin Street, Northeast, a burst of gunfire erupted. When officers from the Fifth District of the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they found two men suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services rushed both victims to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite all life-saving efforts, David Remen was pronounced dead. The second victim, a manager at the company, was shot six times but initially survived. The location of the shooting was later identified as the office of Trojan Labor, a business that specializes in placing low-skilled laborers, which has since been renamed Hire Quest Direct.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to identify a suspect. On October 24, 2019, 21-year-old Matthew Walker of Northeast, D.C., was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder while Armed in connection with David Remen's death. Surveillance footage from the morning of the murder showed a man, alleged to be Walker, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a mask, and using a Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol to carry out the attack. A tip later led investigators to the recovery of the suspected firearm hidden near the crime scene, along with discarded clothing in neighborhood trash bins that matched what the suspect was wearing.
During the subsequent legal proceedings, Matthew Walker's mental competency to stand trial was a point of contention. In September 2021, a DC Superior Court judge found him mentally incompetent. However, by March 2023, he was deemed mentally competent to stand trial. Walker rejected a plea deal that would have resulted in a 30-year prison sentence. Ultimately, in a bench trial that commenced in January 2024, prosecutors presented dramatic video evidence and emotional testimony. Matthew Walker was found guilty of the first-degree murder of David Remen and was sentenced to 50 years of incarceration. Walker was also charged in connection with a separate fatal stabbing that occurred in April 2019.
