In the small community of Lipscomb, Alabama, the life of 18-year-old Hajsun Jermale Hudson Jr. was tragically cut short. Known affectionately as 'poo man' to his loved ones, the young Black man had just celebrated his birthday a few weeks prior to the incident. He was a student at Bessemer High School with a future that his mother, Diamond Broaden, described as bright.
On a Friday just before noon, Hudson was one of three passengers in a car driven by a 24-year-old man.
The other occupants were also minors, one of whom was Hudson's 17-year-old cousin. Their journey took a fatal turn when the Lipscomb Police Department initiated a pursuit of their vehicle. The chase ended in a devastating crash at 6th Avenue North and 5th Avenue North. The car was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, estimated to be over 100 miles per hour, when the collision occurred.
The aftermath of the crash left a family grappling with immense grief and a multitude of unanswered questions. Hudson succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the wreck, leaving his mother to mourn the loss of her oldest child. In her sorrow, she questioned the driver's decision to flee from the police and the excessive speed at which he drove, pondering why he didn't simply pull over. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has taken charge of the investigation into the crash.
