On April 15, 2023, 17-year-old Shaunkivia Nicole "Keke" Smith attended a "Sweet 16" birthday party at the Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio in Dadeville, Alabama. The celebration turned tragic when gunfire erupted around 10:34 p.m., resulting in the deaths of Smith and three others, and injuring 32 additional individuals.
