A sense of excitement and anticipation filled the air in Dadeville, Alabama, as friends and family gathered to celebrate a Sweet 16 birthday party on the evening of April 15, 2023. Among the attendees was 17-year-old Shaunkivia Nicole Smith, a senior at Dadeville High School who was eagerly looking forward to her own graduation. The celebration, held at the Mahogany Masterpiece dance studio, was a scene of joy and youthful exuberance, with music and dancing filling the space.
The festive atmosphere was shattered when gunfire suddenly erupted, turning a night of celebration into one of unimaginable horror. In the chaos that ensued, Shaunkivia, along with three other young people, was fatally wounded. The other victims were identified as 18-year-old Philstavious “Phil” Dowdell, 19-year-old Marsiah Emmanuel “Siah” Collins, and 23-year-old Corbin Dehmontrey Holston. In addition to the four fatalities, dozens of others were injured in the mass shooting, leaving the small community of Dadeville in a state of shock and mourning.
In the days following the tragic event, law enforcement launched an intensive investigation. Their efforts led to the arrests of several suspects. Among those taken into custody and charged with four counts of reckless murder were brothers Tyreese “Ty Reik” McCullough, 17, and Travis McCullough, 16, both of Tuskegee, and 20-year-old Wilson LaMar Hill Jr. of Auburn. The two teenagers were slated to be tried as adults. The investigation continued, with authorities indicating that more charges could be forthcoming as they worked to piece together the events that led to the senseless loss of four young lives.
