In the summer of 2023, a heart-wrenching story unfolded in the small city of Tarrant, Alabama, with the death of two-year-old Ariyah Crawford. The young female child passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. In the days that followed, family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of the toddler, with a visitation and funeral service held on Saturday, July 22, 2023.
The circumstances of Ariyah's death, however, led to a criminal investigation.
On the day she died, Tarrant police and fire departments were dispatched to a residence on Old Pinson Highway after a report that a child was not breathing. First responders found the two-year-old without a pulse and she was rushed to Children's of Alabama, where she was pronounced dead. Her parents initially told authorities that the child had been sleeping in a bed with her mother, Farrah Bates.
An autopsy performed by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office revealed the tragic truth behind Ariyah's death: she had fentanyl in her system. This discovery shifted the focus of the investigation, and evidence from the scene was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for analysis. For months, the investigation continued as authorities awaited the results of the forensic report.
In November 2023, four months after Ariyah's death, the investigation culminated in the arrest of her 23-year-old mother, Farrah Bates. She turned herself in to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office charged Bates with reckless manslaughter and chemical endangerment of a child by exposing her to controlled substances. Her bond was set at $90,000.
