Jermaine James Kidd, a 24-year-old Black male, was killed on May 11, 2021, in Center Point, Alabama. The events of that day began to unfold around 1:30 p.m. at the Summit Ridge Apartments on Haversham Circle. Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies were initially called to the location after a woman reported that Kidd had assaulted and threatened her. By the time law enforcement arrived, however, Kidd had already departed from the apartment complex.
Later that afternoon, at approximately
3:00 p.m., deputies received a second call concerning the same location. This time, the report was of a shooting. Upon their return to the Summit Ridge Apartments, deputies discovered Jermaine James Kidd at the scene, deceased from a fatal gunshot wound. It was reported that Kidd had come back to the complex, leading to the fatal confrontation.
The individual responsible for the shooting was identified as 24-year-old Rayshard Davaria Smith. Smith fled the scene immediately after the incident but was later located and taken into custody in Birmingham. He was subsequently charged with manslaughter in connection with Kidd's death. The indictment specified that the charge stemmed from a 'sudden heat of passion caused by a provocation recognized by law.'
In March 2023, Rayshard Davaria Smith's case went to trial. During the legal proceedings, Smith's defense argued that his actions were taken in self-defense. He testified that he believed Kidd was armed at the time of their encounter. After considering the evidence and testimony presented, the jury ultimately acquitted Smith of the manslaughter charge, accepting his claim of self-defense.
