In the early morning hours in Ohatchee, Alabama, a traffic stop on Grayton Road South unfolded into a fatal encounter for Brittany Nicole Yoder of Anniston. The stop, initiated by a Calhoun County Sheriff's deputy at approximately 3:32 a.m., quickly escalated upon the discovery of a significant quantity of methamphetamine and a pistol inside the vehicle.
This led to the arrest of both Yoder and the male driver, Timothy Alan Wood of Wilsonville, on charges of trafficking in methamphetamines and for certain persons being forbidden to possess a pistol.
While awaiting a wrecker service to tow the vehicle, the situation took a dramatic and tragic turn. Yoder, after being placed in the back of the patrol car, began to ask the deputy for help. When the deputy opened the car door to check on her, Yoder emerged pointing a pistol at the deputy's head. The deputy was able to react, deflecting the firearm and discharging his own weapon, which struck and killed Yoder at the scene.
Further investigation revealed that although both Yoder and Wood had been handcuffed with their hands behind their backs, Yoder had managed to slip one of her cuffs, allowing her to gain control of a pistol. The entire incident was captured on the deputy's body-worn camera, and authorities reported that the footage confirmed Yoder's actions. It was later discovered that while the pistol Yoder held was loaded with a magazine containing live ammunition, a round was not in the chamber when she pulled the trigger. The Oxford Police Department and the Center for Applied Forensics at Jacksonville State University were tasked with conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The deputy involved in the incident was physically unharmed.
