On September 14, 2019, 49-year-old Douglas Dewayne Sparks, a master plumber from Wellborn, Alabama, was fatally shot while working at a residence in Gadsden. Sparks had been hired by 61-year-old homeowner Orva Kyle McDonald Jr. to perform plumbing repairs. During the course of his work, Sparks was shot multiple times and found deceased in the side yard of the property.
