In an African-American neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the lives of 37-year-old Cleveland D. Walker, a Black male, and his girlfriend, 38-year-old Meania M. Jones, came to a violent end on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. A concerned family member discovered their bodies inside their home in the 5800 block of North 38th Street shortly before 4 p.m. and immediately contacted the police.
Both Walker and Jones had been fatally shot.
When Milwaukee police arrived at the scene, they found a quantity of drugs, leading them to believe the double homicide was likely drug-related. Investigators learned that both Walker and Jones had previous criminal records involving drugs. Walker had a history that included convictions for marijuana possession in 1998, fleeing an officer in 2000, and, most seriously, possession of cocaine with intent to deliver in 2004. Jones had also been convicted of cocaine possession in 2004. This history, combined with the evidence at the scene, pointed investigators toward a motive rooted in the drug trade.
In the immediate aftermath of the killings, the Milwaukee police spokeswoman, Anne E. Schwartz, confirmed the presence of drugs at the residence and stated that the investigation was ongoing. However, authorities had not identified any suspects and had made no arrests in connection with the double murder. The initial investigation did not yield any publicly released information about potential leads or persons of interest.
Despite the initial belief that the crime was connected to the victims' pasts, the case grew cold. In the years that followed, there have been no public announcements of any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the murders of Cleveland Walker and Meania Jones. The case remains an unsolved homicide, leaving their families without answers and the perpetrators still at large. The community was left to mourn the loss, with funeral services for Walker being held at the Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church.
