On a late summer evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of Demetrius Lamar Raines, a 31-year-old African-American man, was violently cut short. On September 4, 2008, in the 4100 block of 39th Avenue North, witnesses reported a horrifying scene unfolding. Raines was forcibly pulled from a dark-colored Ford F-150 pickup truck by two unidentified men.
