Do you know where Logan is?
In a case that stretched across two decades, the story of five-year-old Logan Nathaniel Bowman reached a somber conclusion long after he vanished from his Galax, Virginia home. A white male with blond hair, Logan was last seen on January 7, 2003. At the time of his disappearance, the young boy was nursing a healing fracture in his left arm and had burn scars on his feet. The last person to see him was his father, Wayne Bowman, who had dropped him off with his mother, Cynthia Davis. When Wayne was subsequently unable to see his son, he grew concerned and pressed for a missing person report to be filed.
For nearly twenty years, Logan's whereabouts remained a mystery. Then, in September 2022, a person walking in a wooded area off Iron Ridge Road in Galax discovered a trash can. Inside were the skeletal remains of a child. Investigators also found a gray and blue sleeping bag and a white Winnie the Pooh blanket nearby. It would take more than a year for the final confirmation to come. In December 2023, through advanced DNA analysis, the remains were positively identified as those of Logan Bowman.
Even before Logan's body was found, a measure of justice had been sought in his disappearance. In 2003, his mother, Cynthia Davis, and her then-boyfriend, Dennis 'Danny' Schmermerhorn, faced charges. Schmermerhorn's felony murder charge was dismissed in 2004 for lack of evidence, though he was convicted of one count of child neglect and served a year in jail. Davis gave conflicting stories about what happened to her son but was ultimately sentenced for her role in his presumed death. She pleaded guilty to homicide and two counts of child neglect. For the homicide, she received a 30-year sentence with 15 years suspended.
The official identification of Logan's remains brought a new wave of sorrow for his father, who had suspected the discovery was his son. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office, which investigated the finding of the remains, indicated that the confirmation could lead to new charges being filed in the long-unsolved case, offering the potential for a final chapter in the tragic story of Logan Bowman.
