A Sunday afternoon gathering to watch the Denver Broncos took a tragic turn, ending in the death of 67-year-old Jose Diaz-Luevano. The fatal shooting occurred at a home near the intersection of 36th and Lafayette in Denver. Diaz-Luevano, a male, was hosting a party for family and friends to enjoy the football game.
During the gathering, a man identified as 33-year-old Clay Baeza-Garcia arrived at the residence.
Accounts from witnesses suggest that Diaz-Luevano, in a gesture of hospitality, was grilling food for Baeza-Garcia. It remains unclear whether Baeza-Garcia was an invited guest or if he knew the family prior to the incident. An argument is reported to have broken out between Baeza-Garcia and Diaz-Luevano's 36-year-old son, Alejandro Diaz.
The confrontation escalated when Baeza-Garcia allegedly produced a firearm. As Alejandro Diaz and Baeza-Garcia struggled over the weapon, it discharged. The single gunshot struck Jose Diaz-Luevano in the chest. A child at the party reportedly ran from the house screaming, 'They shot my Papi!' Shortly after being shot, Jose Diaz-Luevano succumbed to his injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, attendees of the party managed to detain Baeza-Garcia, preventing him from fleeing the scene before police arrived. Law enforcement officers took Baeza-Garcia into custody and he was later held on suspicion of first-degree murder.
