On a pleasant October afternoon in 2015, the sound of gunfire shattered the peace at an apartment complex in Denver, Colorado. Dareon Tarbor, a 30-year-old Black man, was found shot and bleeding outside a building at 11100 East Dartmouth Avenue on October 10, 2015. Residents in the area heard between four and six gunshots ring out from near the laundry room.
Good Samaritans rushed to Tarbor's aid, finding him with gunshot wounds to his chest and arm. They tried to apply pressure to his wounds with towels while he repeatedly told them, 'I can't breathe, I can't breathe, help me, I can't breathe.' Despite their efforts and being rushed to a local hospital, Tarbor succumbed to his injuries. The Denver County coroner later confirmed that the cause of death was gunshot wounds and the manner was a homicide.
Witnesses reported seeing three people running from the scene after the gunfire erupted. However, the Denver Police Department did not release any suspect information to the public. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, but to date, no arrests have been announced in connection with Dareon Tarbor's death. His case is now considered a cold case. Tarbor, a former resident of Waterloo, Iowa, was returned to his family there for burial.
