A simmering dispute at a Denver house party in the early hours of a November morning in 2015 tragically cut short the life of 21-year-old Cristian Martinez. The celebration, held at a residence near West Bayaud Avenue and South Bannock Street, took a violent turn, resulting in a shooting that left Martinez dead and three other individuals wounded. Emergency services rushed Martinez to Denver Health Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound shortly after arrival.
In
the wake of the shooting, the Denver Police Department identified 19-year-old Darius Eugene Ratcliff as the suspect. A manhunt ensued for Ratcliff, who was considered armed and dangerous. He managed to evade capture for several months, during which he was implicated in other violent crimes. His time as a fugitive came to an end in July 2016, when police located him. A confrontation followed, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which Ratcliff was wounded by an officer before being taken into custody.
Following his arrest, Darius Ratcliff faced a litany of charges, including the murder of Cristian Martinez. In December 2017, a Denver jury found him guilty of first-degree murder for the death of Martinez, as well as two counts of attempted first-degree murder. For these crimes, he received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, in addition to consecutive sentences for other offenses that amounted to an extra 128 years. The investigation revealed that Ratcliff had opened fire on a group of people after they were asked to leave the house party.
