A 63-year-old white male, Richard 'Gene' Hammond, was tragically killed on Valentine's Day in 2017. A retired U.S. Marine Major, Hammond was a beloved grandfather and the Director of Transportation for Falcon School District 49. His days began early, and on that Tuesday morning, he left his Denver home between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. for his job in Fountain, a commute he regularly made.
He was driving his 2012 Subaru Impreza, a familiar sight to those who knew his routine.
Tragically, Hammond never made it to work that day. Later that day, about 12 hours after he was estimated to have left his home, both he and his car were found less than half a mile from his house, near the intersection of Bruce Randolph Avenue and York Street. He had been fatally shot. The accomplished and respected family man was found inside his car, having sustained a gunshot wound to the head. The Denver Police Department opened a homicide investigation into his death.
Despite the passage of several years, the case of Richard Hammond's murder remains unsolved, leaving his family heartbroken and searching for answers. His daughters remember him as a thoughtful man who put his heart and soul into everything he did. He was looking forward to meeting his grandchild and walking his daughter down the aisle. When he was found, his wallet, cell phone, and wedding ring were missing. Law enforcement has not publicly identified any suspects in the case. A reward of up to $12,000 has been offered by Metro Denver Crime Stoppers for any information that leads to an arrest. The community continues to hope that someone will come forward with information to bring closure to his grieving family and see justice served for a man who had dedicated his life to serving his country and his community.
