Zack “Third” Johnson III, a 52-year-old Black man, was living in Memphis, Tennessee, when he died on December 5, 2008.

In the days that followed, the public notice of his passing focused on the rituals of goodbye rather than the circumstances of how his life ended. Family and friends were invited to gather for visitation on Wednesday, December 10, and to return the next day for a Thursday service at noon. The arrangements were handled through N.J.
