On a Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 29, 2017, a heated argument between a father and son escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 18-year-old Kobe Hoyle. The Black male was shot and killed by his father, 55-year-old Brentnol James, outside of their Branwood Drive home in the Donelson area.
The dispute began as a verbal confrontation that quickly turned physical. During the altercation, James sustained an injury to his face.
According to James' account to law enforcement, he was scared of his son, who he claimed had threatened to rob him. Feeling that his life was in danger, James retrieved a firearm and shot Hoyle. When Metro Nashville Police responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m., they found Kobe Hoyle deceased from a gunshot wound.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Brentnol James was not charged with the death of his son. The decision was made following a consultation between the Metro Nashville Police Department and the District Attorney's Office. Authorities investigated James' claim of self-defense, and based on the circumstances presented, they decided against filing charges. It was reported that both father and son had previous criminal histories. Just a month prior to his death, Hoyle had been arrested on charges of criminal impersonation, vandalism, and evading arrest. His father's record included arrests for various charges between 1996 and 2016.
