Shawn Marcus Davis, an 18-year-old Black male from Duquesne, Pennsylvania, was fatally shot early on October 22, 2007, during an attempted armed home invasion in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. According to police, Davis and an accomplice, 20-year-old Rashawn Gibson of Garfield, forcibly entered an apartment located at 300 North Negley Avenue around 3:15 a.m. Officers patrolling nearby heard a gunshot and the sound of breaking glass.
Upon responding to the scene, they discovered Davis deceased inside the apartment, having suffered a fatal shotgun wound to the head. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office officially declared him dead just ten minutes later and later identified him through fingerprint analysis.
Investigators reported that Davis and Gibson entered the apartment with weapons, confronting the occupants and ordering them to lie on the floor. Davis, armed with a handgun, reportedly led one resident at gunpoint to the rear of the apartment while Gibson assisted in the operation. When they returned to the front of the residence, Davis continued threatening others who had sought refuge in the kitchen. At that point, one of the apartment occupants, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed and who was not a resident of the apartment, fired a shotgun at Davis, striking him in the head and killing him instantly.
Rashawn Gibson attempted to flee the scene by jumping through a window but was quickly apprehended by police officers nearby. Gibson was subsequently charged with multiple offenses including burglary, robbery, and criminal conspiracy. As of the time of reporting, law enforcement officials, including detectives from the East Liberty station and the Allegheny County District Attorney's office, were continuing to evaluate whether additional charges were appropriate.
