Lillainya Rachko, a 29-year-old resident of Pittsburgh, was tragically killed on January 1, 2010, in a murder-suicide incident. Just about 30 minutes into the new year, Rachko was attacked by her boyfriend, 38-year-old William Murray, at a residence on Orangewood Street in Beechview. Murray used an aluminum baseball bat to beat Rachko to death in the basement of the home. The brutal attack occurred while the couple was reportedly drinking together in the basement family room. Murray's mother, who was present upstairs at the time, called 911 to report the ongoing violence.
Following the attack, Murray fled the scene, cutting himself with a kitchen knife before driving to his home on Camarta Drive. Fearing for his well-being and the possibility of further danger, Pittsburgh police, along with a SWAT team, surrounded his residence. After attempting to communicate with Murray without success, officers eventually forced their way inside. They found Murray dead inside his car in the garage, having taken his own life by cutting himself again. The entire incident was marked by the influence of alcohol and a turbulent relationship between Murray and Rachko, which police described as on-again, off-again.
