In the late hours of a weekend in March 2010, what initially appeared to be a simple car crash in West Philadelphia would soon reveal a more sinister story. Police were called to the intersection of 61st and Ludlow streets shortly after midnight for a report of an auto accident. There, they found a black-and-white taxi that had struck a pole. The driver, a 50-year-old man named Aliou Diallo, was inside.
Upon investigation, it became clear that this was no ordinary traffic accident.
Diallo had sustained a gunshot wound to the back of his head, which had caused him to lose control of his vehicle. He was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, but his injury was too severe. He was pronounced dead at 3:38 p.m. that day. Diallo, a resident of Lindbergh Boulevard, became another victim of the city's ongoing violence.
In the days that followed, the motive for the shooting remained a mystery to investigators. Cash was found in the taxi, which led police to believe that robbery may not have been the primary reason for the attack. The search for a suspect or suspects began, but information was scarce. The case, like many others in the city, presented a difficult challenge for law enforcement.
Years later, the killing of Aliou Diallo was highlighted as one of a number of unsolved homicides in Philadelphia involving Black victims. Despite the passage of time, the case has not been officially closed, and the question of who was responsible for the death of the taxi driver and why they took his life remains unanswered.
