In the late hours of a Friday night in Pittsburgh, the lively atmosphere of the Shamrock Bar on the North Side was shattered by violence. On November 19, 2010, a young man named Robert James, just 23 years old, was inside the Western Avenue establishment when an argument erupted. Shortly after the dispute, a man re-entered the bar and the scene descended into chaos as four to six gunshots rang out, sending patrons scrambling for cover. When the noise subsided, Robert James was found lying unconscious on the floor.
Emergency medical personnel were called to the chaotic scene, but it was too late. James was pronounced dead right there in the bar, having sustained three gunshot wounds to his torso. The cause of his death was later confirmed by the medical examiner as a gunshot wound to the trunk. As police began their investigation into the male victim's death, they learned that a person had been seen fleeing the area immediately after the shooting. Within a day, a suspect was taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting.
More than a year later, in February 2012, authorities publicly identified the man they believed was responsible for Robert James's death. Michael Lowry, then 28 years old and incarcerated in a Minnesota jail on unrelated drug charges, was charged with the 2010 homicide. A witness told investigators that Lowry had been the one to walk into the Shamrock Bar with a silver revolver following the initial argument with James. Police suspected that the deadly encounter may have been gang-related.
