On a cold January evening in 2012, Chaz Anger, a 21-year-old male, was fatally shot on the back porch of his second-story apartment in the Brighton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. in the 3400 block of Fleming Avenue. Authorities reported that Anger had just stepped onto his porch when at least one gunman opened fire from the yard below, striking him in the head and back.
The attack was described by police as an ambush.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing three men in dark hooded sweatshirts fleeing the apartment building immediately after the shooting. Investigators found that approximately 10 shots had been fired at the residence. This was not the first time the building had been targeted; shots were also fired at the same location in October of the previous year, though no one was injured in that incident. Bullet holes from the prior shooting were still visible in the doorway.
Despite the presence of witnesses and a description of the suspects, no immediate arrests were made in connection with Chaz Anger's murder. The motive for the shooting remained unclear to investigators in the initial days, and they could not confirm if the killing was related to gang activity. The Pittsburgh Police Homicide Unit appealed to the public for any information regarding the three men seen running from the scene.
