On a bright evening in August 2012, the sounds of everyday life in a Southwest Philadelphia neighborhood were shattered by gunfire. Responding to a call at 6:17 p.m., police arrived at Edgewood Street near Springfield Avenue to a grim scene. There, lying on the pavement, was 52-year-old Francisco Bland, a male resident of the nearby 6000 block of Trinity Street. He was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his head, face, neck, and upper torso.
Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene just minutes later, at 6:24 p.m.
The investigation into the violent death began immediately, with police canvassing the area for clues and witnesses. Chief Inspector Scott Small stated that the evidence suggested a brutal, close-range attack; at least 14 shots had been fired at point-blank range. Witnesses provided a description of a possible suspect: a thin man in his 30s with dreadlocks, who was seen fleeing the scene heading eastbound on Springfield Avenue. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, and detectives began interviewing family members and witnesses to piece together the events that led to the slaying.
About an hour after the incident, the yellow police tape cordoning off the block could not hold back the anguish of arriving family members. A woman, identifying herself as Bland's sister, pleaded with officers to let her through as sobs wracked her body. The grief was palpable as friends and family grappled with the sudden loss. A friend who approached the edge of the crime scene shook his head in disbelief, remembering Bland as a 'good dude' and lamenting that such a fate should have never befallen him. While investigators noted that Bland was known to police and had an arrest record, the focus remained on finding the person responsible for the brazen daylight killing that had claimed his life.
