In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Northeast Philadelphia, a violent two-car collision at the intersection of Torresdale and Cottman Avenues brought a tragic end to the life of 18-year-old Rashaan Cole. The fatal incident occurred when a driver, later identified as 27-year-old Nehamiah Carstephen, sped through a red light and slammed into the vehicle carrying Cole and three other individuals.
The force of the impact was devastating, claiming the life of another passenger,
29-year-old Ciara Parker, at the scene. Rashaan Cole, who was the nephew of the driver, also succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash. The events leading up to the fatal collision were captured on surveillance video, which authorities recovered as part of their investigation. The video evidence made it apparent that Carstephen was traveling at a high rate of speed just moments before the deadly impact.
Following the crash, Nehamiah Carstephen, a member of the Army Reserve and National Guard, was hospitalized for his injuries. Investigators determined that he was under the influence at the time of the collision. He subsequently faced a series of serious charges, including driving under the influence and homicide by vehicle while under the influence. It was anticipated that Carstephen would be arraigned from his hospital bedside as he began to face the legal consequences of the tragic events that cut short the lives of his own nephew and another passenger.
