On May 24, 2016, 40-year-old Thomas Cheeks was killed during a home invasion in Pittsburgh's Crafton Heights neighborhood. The incident occurred late at night when two intruders broke into his home on Steuben Street. The attackers also shot the family dog before fatally shooting Cheeks. His wife and 14-year-old son were in the house at the time but were unharmed. Cheeks, who owned a local barbershop, was well-known and beloved in his community for his kindness.
