Do you know who murdered Gayle? On August 23, 1973, Gayle Elizabeth Le Clair, a 22-year-old Caucasian woman, failed to arrive for her job at the Eugene Public Library. Concerned when she didn't answer phone calls, her supervisor went to her residence at 1781 Sylvan Street to check on her. The front door was unlocked, and upon entering, the supervisor discovered Gayle's body in her bedroom shortly after 11:00 AM.
She had been the victim of a brutal attack, having suffered numerous stab wounds.
Investigators found no indication of a forced entry into the home. The night before her death, Gayle had been on a date with a male acquaintance. They had gone to a drive-in movie and returned to her apartment for a nightcap. This acquaintance was the last known person to see her alive, at approximately 1:30 a.m. A preliminary autopsy revealed no signs of sexual assault.
Born on January 26, 1951, in Gold Beach, Oregon, Gayle was described as a studious and pleasant young woman. After graduating from community college, she moved to Eugene in January 1972 and began working as a clerk-typist at the library, with aspirations of one day becoming a teacher. In the years following her death, her case grew cold. While no official suspects have been named or arrests made, there has been speculation about potential connections to serial killers active in the region, including Ted Bundy and Dayton Leroy Rogers, though no definitive links have been established. The case remains an unsolved homicide.
