On August 23, 1973, Gayle Elizabeth Le Clair, a 22-year-old Caucasian woman, failed to arrive for her job at the Eugene Public Library. Concerned when she didn't answer phone calls, her supervisor went to her residence at 1781 Sylvan Street to check on her. The front door was unlocked, and upon entering, the supervisor discovered Gayle's body in her bedroom shortly after 11:00 AM. She had been the victim of a brutal attack, having suffered numerous stab wounds.
