On August 15, 1977, the body of 24-year-old Allen James Hamilton was discovered floating in the Willamette River near the Ankeny Pump Station in Portland, Oregon. He had last been seen three days earlier, on August 12, drinking with three unidentified men—two African American and one white—at the Tacoma Tavern. Allen, a Native American and reported transient, was known to have struggled with alcohol. His death was ruled a homicide, as he had been stabbed before ultimately drowning.
