Witnesses reported that Clune was following an unidentified man near the intersection of SW 10th and Alder Street, while verbally confronting him. The situation escalated when the unidentified man turned around and fatally shot Clune. The shooter then fled the scene, heading west on Alder Street and north on SW 11th Avenue.
Clune, who was described as transient and known for being
aggressive when intoxicated, had recently been on parole for robbery in Texas. On the night of his death, Clune was reportedly demanding that the unidentified man return a bottle to him. The suspect was described as an older white man, around 60 years of age, with gray, shoulder-length hair, standing about 5'6' to 5'7' tall, and weighing between 165 and 175 pounds.
