On the morning of May 19, 1980, a young girl walking along the 100 block of NE Sacramento Street in Portland, Oregon, made a grim discovery. Lying in the weeds of a vacant lot was the body of a man, later identified as 42-year-old Hispanic male, Narciso Fierro. The girl quickly ran to a nearby house to have someone call for help. When police arrived, they found Fierro deceased. An autopsy would later reveal that he had died from apparent stab wounds.
