Kevin Grant, age 39, was killed on January 14, 2008, near a fast-food restaurant at 7th and Market streets in West Oakland. The circumstances of his death involved a confrontation that took place during an arranged marijuana transaction. Atiba Barnes, who was arrested in connection to the incident, entered a plea deal in 2023, accepting a voluntary manslaughter charge and arguing that he acted in self-defense during an attempted robbery by Grant.
