On August 23, 1975, 14-year-old Christie Mullins was brutally murdered in the woods behind the Graceland Shopping Center in Columbus, Ohio. Christie had gone to the shopping center with a friend to check out a cheerleading event. While her friend went inside to gather information, Christie stayed outside. She was later found tied up and beaten to death with a two-by-four in the wooded area behind the center.
A couple walking nearby discovered her body shortly after the attack, but by then, it was too late to save her.
Initially, Jack Carmen, a mentally disabled man, was wrongfully arrested and charged with the crime. He allegedly confessed, which led to his imprisonment. However, after a 1977 trial, he was acquitted when it became evident that his confession had been coerced and that he did not match the description of the person seen by witnesses. The case then went cold for decades until renewed public interest and new evidence reopened the investigation in 2014.
The real killer turned out to be Henry Newell Jr., who had found Christie’s body and initially alerted authorities. In 2015, police identified Newell as the murderer after his relatives came forward, revealing that he had confessed to the crime to family members before his death in 2013. Newell's niece, Pam Brown, recalled that he had described the attack in chilling detail, explaining how he lured Christie into the wooded area and ultimately killed her when she resisted. Newell, who had been seen as a helpful neighbor, had managed to evade suspicion for decades while his family held on to this dark secret.
The Columbus Police publicly apologized to the Mullins family for the mistakes made during the initial investigation and the wrongful arrest of Jack Carmen. Although Newell died before he could face justice, the confession from his relatives brought some closure to Christie Mullins' family, who had long sought answers about her death. This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of investigative errors and coerced confessions, while also demonstrating the importance of pursuing truth, even many years after a crime has occurred.
