On June 12, 1985, 25-year-old African American female Marcia Katherine Matthews was discovered unconscious along Interstate 71 near mile marker 162 in Richland County, Ohio. She had suffered severe head trauma, including a fractured skull, leading to irreversible brain damage. Despite medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries on June 15, 1985. At the time of her death, Marcia stood 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighed approximately 130 pounds, and had black hair and brown eyes.
Marcia, known by the nickname "Pepper," was last seen at the Union 76 Truck Plaza near Ohio Route 97, a location frequented by long-haul truckers. Witnesses reported that around 3:00 a.m., she entered a semi-truck bearing an Arkansas logo. Approximately two and a half hours later, a truck driver found her injured body along the interstate. She had no identification on her person and was later identified through fingerprints from a prior arrest for soliciting sex at the same truck stop in December 1984.
Investigators determined that Marcia's injuries were not consistent with a fall from a moving vehicle, suggesting she had been beaten. Her case was one among several involving the murders of sex workers along Ohio's interstates during the mid-1980s. These cases bore similarities, such as victims being found near highways and having suffered blunt force trauma. Some investigators speculated about the involvement of a serial killer, possibly a truck driver, operating under the CB radio handle "Dr. No."
Despite extensive investigations, including the collection and analysis of DNA evidence, no arrests have been made in connection with Marcia's murder. The case remains open, with law enforcement agencies continuing to seek information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the perpetrator.
