On January 8, 2000, Shantae Smith, an 18-year-old from Toledo, Ohio, was found dead in her apartment on Collingwood Avenue. After family members had not heard from her for several days, they went to check on her. Upon gaining entry, they discovered Shantae’s body, which showed signs of severe trauma. She had suffered a single cut wound to the throat, and investigators believe she had been deceased for one to two days before being discovered.
The death was ruled a homicide by the Toledo Police Department.
The investigation eventually led to her boyfriend, Grady Brinkley, who was connected to the crime under troubling circumstances. Brinkley had been released on bail in December 1999, which Shantae herself had helped to pay. After being released, Brinkley stayed at Shantae’s apartment for several weeks. Following a failure to appear at his pretrial hearing on January 6, 2000, Brinkley murdered Shantae by slitting her throat. He then stole her ATM card and other belongings before attempting to flee to Chicago. Brinkley was arrested shortly afterward by an FBI fugitive task force at his mother’s home in Chicago, still wearing Shantae's winter coat.
Grady Brinkley was later convicted of Shantae's murder, and the Ohio jury recommended a death sentence, which the court subsequently imposed. Brinkley's actions, which included attempting to withdraw cash with Shantae’s ATM card after the crime, underscored his intention to escape and avoid facing justice for his previous crimes. This tragic event highlights the vulnerability that Shantae faced, ultimately being betrayed by someone she had tried to help out of a difficult situation. The conviction brought some measure of justice, but the story remains a devastating example of domestic violence that led to a brutal outcome.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, alongside local authorities, worked to bring Brinkley to justice, ensuring that the case did not remain unsolved for long. Shantae’s death is remembered as part of Toledo's history of tragic homicides, and her story serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing support for victims of domestic violence.
