Carole Varnes, a 51-year-old resident of Toledo, Ohio, was tragically killed on March 11, 1994. On that morning, Varnes was leaving her home on West Oakland Street to head to her car, which was parked at the rear of her property. At approximately 5:40 a.m., her adult son, who was still inside the home, heard her scream followed by the sound of her car horn, and then a gunshot.
