Summary based on 7 sources
David Nathan Danford was a lifelong resident of Lookingglass, a quiet, unincorporated community in rural Oregon known for its scenic river valley southwest of Roseburg. A 65-year-old man, he was deeply rooted in the area where he was born and raised. David worked as a logger and was an avid outdoorsman who found peace in hunting and fishing in the surrounding wilderness. To his neighbors and friends, he was known for his ready sense of humor and his willingness to lend a hand whenever needed. He was a family man, survived by his son, two daughters, and several beloved grandchildren. His life, however, came to a sudden and violent end in his own home.

The afternoon of Sunday, October 11, 2026, began a sequence of events that would shatter the community's peace. At approximately 3:45 p.m., the Douglas County 911 dispatch center received a call from a man reporting a "situation" at a residence in the 7000 block of Lookingglass Road. The caller was 57-year-old Matthew William Bronsert, who lived in an outbuilding on the same property as David Danford. Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office were immediately dispatched to the scene to investigate the vague but concerning call.

When deputies arrived at the rural property, they were met by an uncooperative and agitated Bronsert. He refused to exit the residence, initiating a tense standoff with law enforcement that would last for nearly two hours. Negotiators worked to persuade him to surrender peacefully. Just before 6:00 p.m., Bronsert finally emerged from the home. As deputies moved to detain him, he allegedly became combative and attempted to assault one of the officers. He was subdued and taken into custody. During the arrest, officers observed what appeared to be blood on his clothing.

The presence of blood on Bronsert prompted the deputies to conduct a welfare check on the main house to ensure the safety of its resident, David Danford. Inside, they made a devastating discovery. David was found deceased, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. It was immediately apparent that he was the victim of a homicide, and the scene was secured for a full investigation.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team was activated to handle the case. This multi-agency unit, comprising detectives from the Sheriff’s Office, the Roseburg Police Department, and the Oregon State Police, began processing the scene and interviewing witnesses in consultation with the Douglas County District Attorney's Office. During questioning, Matthew Bronsert reportedly admitted to detectives that he had shot David Danford following an argument.

Bronsert was arrested and transported to the Douglas County Jail, where he was lodged on initial charges of Murder in the Second Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. He was held without the possibility of bail. Additional charges were later filed, including Attempted Assault on a Public Safety Officer for his actions during the arrest and Improper Use of the Emergency Reporting System related to his 911 call.

The investigation into David Danford's death remains active under case number 26-3196. In the days following the homicide, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office issued a public appeal for information. Detectives asked anyone with knowledge of the crime, or of the activities and whereabouts of either David Danford or Matthew Bronsert in the time leading up to the shooting, to come forward. As of October 2026, the case is proceeding through the court system.
